Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chair Remarks at Press Conference on SCOTUS Hearing of Judge Kavanaugh
Washington, D.C. – This afternoon, Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chair Michelle Lujan Grisham (NM-01) joined CHC Members for a press conference to highlight the threat Judge Kavanaugh would pose to Hispanic families and urge the Senate to defeat his nomination for the Supreme Court of the United States.
Below are the CHC Chair’s remarks as prepared:
“Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination for the Supreme Court of the United States directly threatens equality and freedom not just for the Hispanic community, but for all Americans.
“His past decisions and opinions, denying women and immigrants basic services and rolling back workplace protections demonstrate he would lend strong support to President Trump’s anti-immigrant agenda.
“It's clear that Judge Kavanaugh doesn’t believe in promoting fairness for minority and immigrant families.
“His critical and frankly dangerous views on affirmative action and civil rights would affect our ability to ensure that higher education, access to healthcare, banking and housing are all more equitable and truly serving all Americans.
“His thinking and rulings would undermine the Hispanic community’s ability to prosper in a free and fair America.
“His ideological verdicts to uphold voter ID laws, lift restrictions on dark money in politics, oppose financial protections for families and consumers, undermine environmental justice, and his views on many other issues will undoubtedly stifle any ability to move forward on concerns affecting our community, and cause irreparable harm to the everyday lives of Americans for generations to come.
“I urge the Senate to defeat Kavanaugh’s nomination for the Supreme Court of the United States.”
