Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chair Denounces Trump Administration Proposal to Detain Children and Parents Indefinitely

Sep 7, 2018
Press Release

Washington, D.C. - Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham (NM-01) released the following statement in reaction to the Trump administration’s announcement to circumvent court limits on the government’s ability to hold minors in immigration jails by terminating the Flores Settlement Agreement:

“The Flores Settlement Agreement was put in place to protect children just like 18-month-old Mariee Juárez, who got sick while incarcerated and died soon after her release. Despite having evidence of the dire consequences of terminating the Flores Agreement, including a child losing her life and the countless accounts of children who have been physically and emotionally harmed while incarcerated, the Trump Administration is doubling down by knowingly deciding to end an agreement that will lead to more deaths and risks putting more children and families in danger. The Trump Administration's willingness to make this decision with full knowledge of the atrocious repercussions is negligent and illegal given that it violates federal and state laws enacted to protect children.”
