Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chair Condemns Trump Administration’s Public Charge Proposal
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Michelle Lujan Grisham (NM-01), Chairwoman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus issued the following statement after the Trump administration released proposed changes to the so-called, “public charge” test, which would deny green cards to eligible immigrants who have participated in government programs.
“This is a cheap political ploy designed to stoke fear and resentment, and attack hardworking immigrant families at the expense of children’s health and well-being. Multiple studies have shown that immigrants pay billions in state, local, and federal taxes, helping to strengthen our economy and our country. Questioning their contributions as entrepreneurs, educators and innovators has no place in our politics and we must call out this proposal for what it is – a cynical policy designed to malign immigrant families and undermine the economic contributions of legal residents.
“This latest proposal demonstrates this administration’s true intent – cut legal immigration at all costs even if it means denying basic nutrition and vital health care services to millions of children and their families. An abundant body of evidence has shown that malnutrition and lack of health care can cause a host of short- and long-term health issues and other consequences. That is why health experts and family advocacy groups like the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and March of Dimes staunchly oppose the public charge proposal out of concern that millions of families will forgo vital resources and feel compelled to go hungry and remain sick in order to protect themselves from any risk of deportation.
“Just as Congressional Republicans and this administration circumvented the will of the American people by sabotaging legislative proposals to fix our immigration system, their deliberately punitive and subversive tactics are a ploy to distract us from their disastrous policies that hurt everyday working families.”
