Dec 3, 2018
Press Release

WASHINGTON—Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Member Rep. Ben Ray Luján (NM-03) made history this week by becoming the highest ranking Latino in U.S. House of Representatives as newly elected Assistant Democratic Leader. Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20), CHC Chairman Elect, issued the following congratulatory statement:

“Congratulations to Congressman Luján on his election as Assistant Democratic Leader this week, becoming the highest ranking Latino in the U.S. House of Representatives history. As the first Latino chair of the DCCC, he oversaw unprecedented diversity among staff, and helped usher in an equally diverse class of Democratic incoming Members. Congressman Luján proved his leadership in working to create opportunities for all and his commitment to upholding CHC values through his career, leaving me no doubts that he will carry this forward into his new role,” said Chairman Elect Castro. “As we prepare to face the unique challenges brought by this Administration’s unrelenting attacks on the Latino community, I know Congressman Luján will be an invaluable partner to our Caucus in fighting to uphold the American spirit and a great representation of us in Democratic House Leadership.”

Background: Luján assumed office in January 2009 and in 2013, was appointed to House Democratic Leadership as a Chief Deputy Whip. In the 114th Congress, Luján served as Chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and was elected by his colleagues to again serve in this role for the 115th Congress.
