CHC Chair Statement on ‘New Trump Era’ of Immigration

Apr 12, 2017
Press Release

Washington, D.C. – Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chairwoman Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham released the following statement in response to Attorney General Jeff Session’s announcement that the Department of Justice (DOJ) will focus even more resources on immigration offenses:

“Attorney General Sessions’ order to prioritize the use of limited agency resources for the prosecution of petty immigration offenses over violent or serious crimes is irresponsible and ineffective. The truth is that immigration related prosecutions already make up more than half of the DOJ’s caseloads and alarmingly, only .01 percent of immigration related prosecutions in the ‘new Trump Era’ were for dangerous criminal acts. We aren't building trust between police and communities or ‘returning to a proud system of immigration’ by filling up our jails with immigrants and tearing families apart. Instead of offering workable solutions to our nation’s outdated immigration system President Trump, Attorney General Sessions and their anti-immigrant advisors, Jon Feere and Julie Kirchner, only offer blunt force.”

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC), founded in December 1976, is organized as a Congressional Member organization, governed under the Rules of the U.S. House of Representatives. The CHC is dedicated to voicing and advancing, through the legislative process, issues affecting Hispanics in the United States, Puerto Rico and U.S. Territories
