CHC Chair Statement on Republican Proposal to Fund Border Wall
Jul 12, 2017
Washington, D.C. - Washington, D.C. - Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chairwoman Michelle Lujan Grisham released the following statement after Republicans on the House Appropriations Committee unveiled a bill that includes $1.6 billion in taxpayer funds for President Trump’s border wall:
“The people who know the border the best, whether it’s companies or lawmakers, border communities, trade groups, economists, and law enforcement officials, both Republicans and Democrats, all agree that building a wall is unnecessary, impractical, ineffective, and a complete waste of time and taxpayer money. Yet in their rush to fulfill President Trump’s isolationist and anti-immigrant campaign promises, House Republicans are willing to jeopardize the economic security of our nation on a misguided and costly proposal that will grind to a halt the funding of our government. A multi-billion dollar wall funded by taxpayers is irresponsible and serves no purpose other than to score political points. I will not support funding for a wall and will call on all Members of Congress, regardless of party, to do the same.”
